Our Faith; Four Principles

It was about three and a half years ago when this conversation occurred. It took place between myself, a dear friend and a young man. The conversation’s lead I do not remember, but I remember the following;

Young man; “So then, what is it that you two believe?”

Me; “I can’t explain. If you believe it, then you just know.”

Young man; “Ugh, women…”

Friend; “It’s not just women. We know men who believe this too and I’m sure they’d agree.”

It took me a lot of time to finally begin to comprehend, in modern English words, what I/we believe. In my dreams, I often have in depth conversations with people about these beliefs but they are never held in any language that I know. While in these dreams though, everything makes sense and the conversations have a lot of depth and content. Yet when I wake up, I am unable to reproduce any of this.

So after both having done my third set of exams (yay!) as well as some long thinking, I have come up with the basics of what we believe. To keep things simple for now, I will explain the four basic principles. I spoke to my friend about this too and she agrees that they encompass mostly what we feel is important. So here are the four basic principles for a faith that has no name.

Be kind

When considering kindness, this means that you extend a helping hand to others. You treat them in a fashion that you would like to be treated by others. You attempt to be considerate of the feelings and thoughts of others and will not judge them for it. Yet while emanating such kindness into the world, you also need to give it to yourself. You need to give to yourself that which you need; food, sleep, relaxation and anything else that you might need that is not based on material needs. Perhaps you enjoy exercise to help your body. Perhaps you like to read to enhance your knowledge. Perhaps you enjoy creative outlets. These are also forms of being kind to yourself.

Be gentle

The second principle is based on gentleness. This does not entail you can not be assertive in what you need and want. It means that you will be a calm person and be gentle to yourself and your surroundings. You will be gentle to animals and other forms of nature. You will be kind to trees and plants and will be considerate of their contribution. A gentle nature also means that you will be gentle in emotions. Though you may become upset or angry, it is important to understand why so you can attempt to resolve it and be calm and gentle once again. By solving your problems, you are being good to yourself. Also included in this principle is patience. This principle is closely linked with the first.

Be true

This principle asks that you be honest and fair with the world and yourself. You need to accept what the world gives you and treat it as its honesty. Also be honest with yourself and accept what and who you are. If you have flaws, that is okay. Be aware of them and accept them to the best of your ability. The principle of truth also means that you need to attempt to be yourself; the real, true you. It means that you follow what your heart tells you is right. In doing so, you must still be aware of facts that the world presents to you. Ignorance is definitely not bliss. Be curious of the world and attempt to uncover its secrets. Look beyond the veil. Do this with people in your life too. Judge them for their heart only if you know their heart’s contents and intent.

Be open

Being open means being curious as well as open-minded. Do not shut yourself off from the world and other people. See experiences as building blocks for your own self. If things go well, you are being rewarded. If things are tough, you are being given a lesson. Such an awareness will help you face hardships. Expansion of the mind and personal, spiritual growth are the path that our beliefs attempt to place people on. Being open also means that attempting to accept anything that comes your way. Letting go and simply enduring might be hard but it is often the best way to overcome hardships.

By combining all these principles, you can attempt to be an overall good person who strives to do what is right and to grow. This will ultimately lead to the greater goals in our faith; completion, connection and infinite love. I will write more about this next time. I wish to keep this post simple and basic so it doesn’t become overwhelming. If you are still curious however, be patient and it will come to you.

May destiny be kind to you.

Spectrum

Yesterday was gloomy. The sky was filled with pale clouds. There was no break to them. The sun was a hidden entity. Rain poured down without end. Therefore, I was happy once I came home and had a chance to pull off my moist (how many of you hate this word?) clothes and change them for some soft, ‘lazy’ clothes. It was then that I decided to partake in some simple creative activities.

Symbol

To me, being creative is a form of color. I felt that was necessary on a dull day such as yesterday. For this reason, I colored in a mandala; in true Tw colors. It wasn’t intended to match my blog’s colors. The colors displayed are ones I like.

MandalaI showed this particular mandala to a friend of mine. She asked me, “What does this symbol mean?” I had no answer to that. I didn’t draw the design. I simple colored it in with colors that I felt belonged there. It got me thinking. If I had picked up the same mandala today and colored it, it would be in completely different colors. I think this depends strongly on my mood.

Yesterday I colored it in cool, purple hues. Today (I suspect) I would color it in warm, fiery colors. Perhaps tomorrow I’d give it a green theme. I think our own mood causes someone to have a stronger attraction to one color over another on specific days. Yesterday I was overrun with deep thoughts. They were so deep that they got a tad out of hand. I attempted to organize them and write them down for you all to read. But alas…

Colors

Now then, I’d like to write down a simple summary of colors. They are linked to Sanskrit beliefs.

Red is the color linked to basic needs such as warmth, safety and sustenance. This color can also represent physical strength and a connection to the Earth itself. Likewise it is connected to the earth element.

Orange is the color that is related to the flowing of bodily fluids as well as ‘spiritual’ energies through your body. This color also associates itself with taking care of yourself (eating, exercising) as well as taking care of your emotional needs; interaction with other human beings. It is connected to water.

Yellow is the color for ego. This isn’t necessarily a bad kind. The ego needs to be in balance. You need to have a healthy image of yourself. This color also associates with physically taking care of yourself. Eating disorders often link to a bad ego that leads to an eating disorder. The color yellow is involved then. It is linked to fire.

Green is the color of love. I know that sounds cheesy. Some of you might like to argue that red is the color of love. My answer is that red is simply the color of passion. It does not represent deep love. This love is spent on one self but also on the world around one self. It is not directed at just one other person. This color’s element is air.

Blue is the color of communicating. This involves both being a listener as well as self-expression. You need to be able to heed what others are trying to communicate to you. At the same time, you need to be able to make yourself heard as well, without becoming too loud or overwhelming. It is a color that associates with open-mindedness and the rise of new ideas; inspiration. The element for this color is ether.

Indigo is the color linked to the ‘third eye’. This is perceived as the sense in all of us that can perceive metaphysics. Using this sense, you can ‘see’ energies around you; aura’s, chakra’s, meridians and other fields of energy will become apparent to you. Or perhaps you will witness the existence of deceased souls. Maybe you will be blessed with the power of pre-cognition instead; the ability to see future events. This color does not have an element.

Violet is the final color in this spectrum. It is seen as a color of spiritual thoughts. If people pursue spiritual enlightenment, they are often seen surrounded by this color. Flashes of this color in their aura represents as spiritual (subconscious) thought. If you want a less ‘vague’ explanation, we can call it the color of wisdom. Its element is often likewise described to be wisdom.

Though these are not all the colors with their own specifics, I wanted to start with a basic summary. I’ve’been meaning to do this for a while now. If you want to learn more about the various colors, then stay tuned! I’ll be writing about colors, chakra’s and aura’s a bit more here and there since it is something that’s strongly involved in my own life. I’d like to inform any curious strangers. So till then…

Connections

ConnectionsAs a baby, we rely on family and other potential caretakers to raise us and protect us. When we become more aware, we make friends in school or other social places. We play with them and learn the norms of our society. In the process we start to uncover who we are and what we are drawn to. As we grow into our teens, potential partners might be noticed and addressed. Many people end up settling down with such a person sooner or later. To help realize our dreams or goals, we network; hoping this will help us get on the path we want to walk. Connections are vital in our society. Connections to people seem to be more vital than any other connections.

There are many kinds that have been distinguished; financial, social, affectionate, psychological and spiritual. The latter might seem to be the most hazy of the bunch but they are as important as all the others.

Financial

A financial connection can be with people as well as institutes. You depend on your parents or a boss for allowance or a salary. Besides this, you can rely on the government to help aid you financially if that’s needed. In contrast, you also have this connection with stores that you purchase products from, insurance companies, the government (taxes) and anything else that you pay money to; both legally or illegally.

Social

The social connection is often understood to be with friends and family. But the connection also reaches towards other people in your social network; teachers, librarians, bus drivers, mail delivery personnel, doctors and so on. These people contribute to your ability to be social.

Affectionate

As a hopeless romantic, this is one of my commonly-addressed topics. Oftentimes but in the mind. The affectionate connection is towards people that you love or care for in any way. Friends generally fall into this category. Family members can in many cases (like my own, luckily) be added to this too. Of course, a life partner falls into this category.

Psychological

These connections occur with people that help you think. These can be friends that you have intellectual conversations with. Many times teachers or professors fall into this category. This is not always so since in various cases, students do not want to learn the topic and thus do not develop this connection. Personally, I find this to often be the starting points of a friendship. Should I be able to talk about science and philosophy with someone, then I will appreciate them greatly.

Spiritual

This connection does not just entail religion. Of course if two people believe in a likewise god or system of divine beings, then that is defined as a spiritual connection. People that believe the same things about the universe as I do, I have this connection with. But also with people that my intuition draws me towards for no apparent reason at all. Often times after we interact and get to know each other, the pieces fall into place and I realize there is a special bond in place.

Transcending

This is not a category of connections. This is but a state that a connection can be in. It is very rare. For some people it is impossible to achieve such a connection with anyone or anything while other people are more able to do this. I believe it can be practiced and learned.

The bond that is ‘transcendent’, as I’m calling it, is one that is not based on current events. It is not something that is or was created in this lifetime. That is, for humans and other animals. Some bonds we create with other creatures comes from lifetimes before our current one. Yet, this transcendence does not limit itself to beings that breathe and move about. It can also be achieved with other living things. Earth is not a dead rock. Upon it live thousands of plants that are alive like we are. They have energies and thus they too can be connected to! What a tree-mendous fact, right?

The Four Elements

In astrology and many other forms of spirituality, people often times speak of the elements. These may vary, depending on which topic they refer to, however I primarily stick to the four that are featured in Western astrology. These are fire, earth, air and water. Each element corresponds with three signs.

Note; The dates stated by the signs are approximates. There are (as far as my knowledge goes) no definite dates. Also, the differences in time zones may cause a slight difference in the dates displayed.

Fire

  • Aries; March 21 – April 19
  • Leo; July 23 – August 22
  • Sagittarius; November 22 – December 21

Fire signs have righteously earned their title. The fire that influences the signs can cause them to be very warm and passionate. They are generally strong-willed individuals. They thrive on intuition and adventure. Their lust for life is often spread to those that are close to them. Fire signs are extroverts; meaning they seek the companionship of other persons often. Though, that does not mean that many of them also desire time to be by themselves.

To the more insecure individual, a fire sign might seem controlling while it is actual determination that drives them. Fires are passionate about what keeps their heart beating; be it love, art, travel or any such interests. Fire signs can often inspire third parties with their passionate attitudes.

While fire signs are bright burning entities, their fires can have negative effects as well. Their brilliance might harm another person through a dramatic expression of the fire sign. Since they are so strong-willed and passionate, they sometimes look past the hearts of others. Yet this rule does not apply to friends and family.

The Flames in These Signs

The Aries is the leader of the signs; being the first of them all. Thusly, one can recognize the fire in their passion for taking the first steps. Aries is very daring and will not step down from a challenge if one presents itself.

The Leo is the prideful sign. Their fire comes forth from their wild side. They can be dramatic but at the same time, present a lot of warmth to the people around them. Therefore, their flames can be felt in the form of cherishment.

The Sagittarius is the free-spirited adventurer; following the arrow of their heart wherever it may carry them. They thusly follow a passion that drives them. They are fond of learning and discovering new things and broadening their horizons.

Earth

  • Taurus; April 20 – May 20
  • Virgo; August 23 – September 22
  • Capricorn; December 22 – January 19

Earth signs are generally very hardworking and practical people. They desire security and are willing to work to provide it for themselves and others. Sometimes keen on material, they might push their desires a bit too far. Their drive is admirable to many, however, even though not many wish for the things that earth signs are seeking; possessions, wealth and/or power.

While hard-working and sometimes materialistic, earth signs have a good mind about themselves. They are often very innovative thinkers and are not afraid of investment. Initiatives can be expected under the ideal circumstances. Earth signs often shy away from uncertain outcomes and thus will not take a leap that holds an unsure outcome.

Earth signs are generally calm persons that enjoy their alone time. Their companionship they prefer from very close people. They keep a small band of people around them that are dear to them yet it would be ideal for them if these cherished persons did not disturb them from their hard work.

The Sturdiness of These Signs

Taurus is both a hard-working and patient introvert; able to understand that obtaining security can often take a lot of time. Taurus is strong-minded and resilient and will not shy away from a task that provides opportunity.

Virgo isn’t fond of change. They tend to cling to that which they know. They take their time with change or any undertakings in general. This includes perfecting themselves. They are very self-critical and strive to become a form of perfection.

Capricorn is often chasing goals instead of enjoying the ride that they are taking to reach these goals. This sign is willing to make sacrifices to obtain these goals and finds relaxation hard to come by. They find that it does not need a place in their routine.

Air

  • Gemini; May 21 – June 20
  • Libra; September 23 – October 22
  • Aquarius; January 20 – February 18

The air signs are communicators. They are found to be the intellects of the zodiac. Air signs enjoy discussing topics of intelligent matters. They will not settle for small talk easily. These diplomatic signs often put their minds to work in clever debates or overthinking philosophies.

Air signs generally deal with concerns through their minds. One can say they neglect matters of emotions completely. They prefer to deal with things through the power of their brains. These diplomats can often use their intelligence to understand various sides of an argument and therefore think upon many matters to often to calculate which outcome they might prefer and what road will lead to that outcome.

While so focused on mental processes, air signs are extroverted persons. They prefer company of other people while still remaining abled to take time to themselves and their thoughts. Air signs often hold a large group of friends around them; as long as these friends do not weight on them too heavily emotionally.

The Whispering Wind Within These Signs

Gemini is the general overthinking air sign that tends to speak more than listen. Their minds are constantly a jumble because they attempt to think of so many things at once. Chaos occurs and this reflects upon their daily lives. Highly communicative, but sporadic at all times.

Libra is the seeker of justice. As it is represented by scales, this sign is the greatest diplomat of the entire zodiac. They can weigh outcomes, possibilities, opinions and morals with the power of their mind. Their ultimate goal is to find eternal harmony of the scales in any way possible. This includes self-sacrifice.

Aquarius is a self-conscious sign that contemplates philosophy often. The wine-pourer is not prone to small talk and is often a bit peculiar in their own way; be it their dress style or their speech. Standing out is a hobby and they will take time out of their schedule to pursue this.

Water

  • Cancer; June 21 – July 22
  • Scorpio; October 23 – November 21
  • Pisces; February 20 – March 19

The forever moving water signs are true to their title. They flow in any possible way; finding themselves in emotions that often seem to grow from a source of nothingness into existence. This can cause a water sign to experience strong mood swings that not even they completely understand. This isolation within the source of their own emotion, causes them to often feel misunderstood and therefore only prefer the company of a rare few.

While some water signs prefer the company of their own emotions, many of them have evolved it into a state of empathy through which they channel the emotions of others; often times losing themselves in doing so. They are highly sensitive to the moods and experiences of third parties and therefore might experience a mood swing that is in accordance with a mood of another person. It thusly maght seem that their experience holds no reasoning.

Because these signs understand that it is often difficult to deal with strong emotions, they can become good listeners and will often become very caring over anyone that is hurt in even the slightest way emotionally. Their cooing is sometimes overwhelming for the receiving party, however.

The Flowing Tendencies of These Signs

Cancer is a very home-loving individual. Their hospitality stems from it. They are generally caring individuals that are prepared to listen to any sorrows that a person is willing to share with them and they will attempt to help another person. All the while they do, they hide their own emotions under a tough shell and only reveal it to people that are very close to them.

Scorpio is the sharp one. Their passionate attitudes come from their strong emotions. They thrive on their own passions; becoming strongly attached to that which is the object of their passion. They will seek out any information about this topic or person in order to satisfy their curious minds.

Pisces is the fish that swims with the direction of any flowing emotional waters. Pisces’ strong intuition and sensitivity often causes them to experience another person’s emotion before experiencing their own and then adjusting their own accordingly. They often do this subconsciously; silently facilitating psychic abilities to sense the energies around them.

Conclusion

As it may have become clear (I hope), every sign has their own unique feature. In turn, every sign holds a connection with their main element but this element is presented within each sign differently; making each one unique.

While the descriptions might be vague or unrecognized by some, that can be explained by the fact that these descriptions apply to the sun signs (this is the sign that the sun is within when you are born; your birth date indicates it). Yet there are many other bodies (planets, the moon, Earth’s position) that influence the personality that you are given. Therefore, the description of your sign might feel untrue because many other signs have influenced you.
